Week 8: Nanotechnology + Art



Looking at this week’s topic first, I was scared because I had no idea what nanotechnology was, and second, I was afraid that I wasn’t going to be able to wrap my head around it. I do admit at some parts of Dr. Gimzewski’s lecture I was so confused, but once he was able to connect it back to products that almost everybody uses, I was very interested. When talking about nanotechnology it seems unrealistic in my mind, but from what I learned from the lecture videos and my research, it now seems all too real.

When Dr. Gimzewski brought up lines like L’Oréal and how nanoparticles are used in athletic wear, it instantly connected to my everyday life. The shampoo and conditioner that I swear by are by L’Oréal, and knowing that I interact with nanoparticles every day blows my mind. I also wear athletic and workout clothes almost every day of the week, so not only is my hair exposed to nanotechnology but also my very skin. Learning that big name brands like L’Oréal, Dior, and Lancôme all use nanotechnology was cool because I have used these products and know just how well they work.


Although I was excited to learn how connected I am to nanotechnology without even knowing it before, it was hard to do my own research without reading into the harsh critics that nanotechnology has. Even Dr. Gimzewski warned us about it in the lectures, but he himself is slightly unsure of it. When he was explaining the nanoparticles in the Slim Shake Chocolate flavor he stated, “Who knows what silicone nanoparticles will do to you in the long run..” This had me questioning a lot about the safety of nanotechnology and our bodies. I found online people worrying about the nanoparticles in sunscreen possibly seeping into the blood stream, or particles getting into our lungs and causing damage. After reading these claims I got a little worried, but overall after everything that I learned from the lectures I do support nanotechnology and I am interested to see what other products will be out on the market that includes nanotechnology.

Week 2: Math + Art

This week we learned about how mathematics and art have such strong ties, since decades ago. In 1316, we see Duccio paint scenes utilizing three dimension. I never knew how far back math and art have gone back. I also thought it was very interesting to learn about the two different perspectives, one being artificial, and the other natural. Looking at paintings from the different time eras it's interesting to see the different ways artists were able to utilize mathematics or not.     Throughout Professors Vesna's lecture's she mainly focused on artists and their paintings throughout history. Week 3: Robotics + Art

Before this week’s lessons, I never thought I had any past experiences with robots and art until I thought back to all those trips I’ve taken to Disneyland. The memorable ride, Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland, puts you face to face with dozens of robots. These robots aren’t just any robots; they combine with the artistic perfection of moving like real human beings. Not only do we see many Jack Sparrow robots throughout the ride, I am also amazed at the way art and robotics were able to mesh with Dirk the homeless robot. Here crowds are shocked at how real looking, acting and feeling this robot is. Looking at the ways robotics and art have been able to come together I think it’s very interesting to bring up the idea that art has influenced robotics. Week 1: Two Cultures

I often feel ashamed when I tell people what my major is. The conversation usually ends with them saying it’s just “a fun major”. Though this never offends me because I know how great being a dance major really is. I know they don’t intentionally mean to come off in a rude way, but those types of interactions show me what little people may think of dance.
