Week 9: Space + Art

In the lecture, Professor Vesna had an entire video on the animals that were sent into space as experiments. This insight made me wonder if we were still testing the effects of space on animals and how could it be any different than animal testing with cosmetic products. From my research, there have been so many deaths in space of mice, rats, frogs, dogs and chimps. Not only are they being tested by going into space, but while up there they are being tested on with injections and much more. I’ve never wanted to look deeply into animal testing because it makes me sad, but my mom has been so against any company that does animal testing. She has changed all of her everyday products at home, and even at her workplace as a hair dress, changed product lines completely. What shocks me about finding out about all of these animal deaths through space is how unaware most of the public is about it.

After learning about the Ansari X Prize through the lecture, it got me interested in learning about commercial traveling through space. I’ve heard plenty of rumors about flights to here or there in a few hours due to space travel, but seeing that Virgin Galactic is actually opening space up to those of us who aren’t astronauts is crazy. It’s almost scary to me to think that just in 1961 the first human went up into space, and today we are living in a time where the average person is able to travel through space.

After learning more about space this week, I have started to think more about my relationship with it. Although I have never had the desire to go up into space, the idea itself scares me. Thinking about it more, seeing shows and movies that Professor Vesna brought up in the lectures, have helped in understanding more about space. Yes, these shows and films are based of fiction and fantasy, but it ultimately makes pathways for researchers to expand their curiosity and knowledge. Although watching movies about aliens taking over the world does scare me, it’s made me more open to what could possibly be out there in space.
